The Big 4 WEEK 4: Task 16

"Plant It and It Will Grow"

THE BIG 4

Today, take a piece of paper and draw a line vertically down the middle. Now draw another horizontal line intersecting the vertical line in the middle so you have four equal quadrants. (it should look like an oversized lower case "t") For each quadrant, you need to develop one specific goal for the following categories: 1. Relationship 2. Health 3. Spirituality 4. Finances  Don't write down several goals for one category; just ONE. So think about what the one ultimate goal you really want to accomplish in each area of your life is and write it down. Example: Health - March 2011, I will be at least 20lbs lighter. Finances - I will have $4,000 in my saving account by _ _ _. For this task, be honest, be specific and most of all be ready to act on the goals you write. Keep this list in a place you can find it.

Task 16 = +2 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

1. How does seeing each goal on paper make you feel?
2. What reasons could keep you from accomplishing any of the four?

"Keep the faith, keep making it happen and remember to always stay out of your own way!"

Finally, find 3 more people and create your own individual handshake together. Make sure you really get everyone into it with you. Don't worry about explaining yourself. Most people won't even ask why they're giving you a high five. They'll just quietly wish they had your excitement! When people do ask, "What's up with you today, why are we high fiving or why are you so excited?" Simply tell them because you choose to be! Remember, excitement is contagious so SPREAD the love!

Just Say Yes WEEK 3: Task 14

"Decisions Determine Our Destiny"   Watch video

Just Say Yes

Today, is the direct opposite of yesterday. Your task is to say, "Yes" to as many people, requests, offers, cravings or things as possible. This may be hard for some of you, but give it your best shot. If someone asks you to do something, politely tell them, "Ok, my pleasure, I'm all over it, let me get right on that, I'd be honored to do that for you" or however you can think of to positively respond to whatever they're requesting. Say, "Yes" to any food cravings you have, helping a friend, listening to someone else's problems, going to lunch, a feeling to get up and dance, being late to that meeting, picking up pizza for dinner tonight or to as many things presented to you today. This challenge requires more thought because you're involving other people, and it may be outside of your character, but you can do it!

Good luck and remember, "Just say YES!"

Note: Use some common sense on this task. DON'T say yes to any dangerous, hazardous or compromising situations. Rule of thumb: If a situation feels uncomfortable...DON'T do it!

JUST SAY NO
Today, your task is to say, "No" to as many people, requests, offers, cravings or things as possible. This may be hard for some of you, but give it your best shot. If someone asks you to do something, politely tell them, "Not right now, I'll follow-up later, I'll get back to you on that, I'm in the middle of something" or whatever nicely gets you out of doing whatever they're requesting. Say, "No" to any food cravings you have, helping a friend, listening to someone else's problems, going to lunch, loaning money, having sex, buying a new outfit, or to as many things presented to you today. This challenge is going to require more thought because you're involving other people, and it may be outside of your character, but you can do it.

What's in Your Purse? WEEK 3: Task 12

"Decisions Determine Our Destiny"   Watch video

WHAT'S IN YOUR PURSE?
Today, take your purse and empty everything inside it onto your bed. This includes all of your pockets as well. Pretty easy so far right? Now, look at all of the items carefully. For the next 2 days, you can ONLY carry 3 items with you wherever you go. Choose carefully and thoughtfully. Hmmm...cell phone, lip gloss, lotion, blush, wallet, mirror, tampons, tissue, comb, glasses? So many to choose from! If you DON'T carry a purse daily and only carry a wallet, the same rules apply. Empty your wallet completely and choose ONLY 3 of those items to carry for the next 2 days. Remember to be honest with yourself. I know this one is hard, but you can do it! :)

For those of you thinking of cheating...DON'T! Don't spend all day today cramming things into your wallet so you have everything you need in there before you dump out your purse tonight. Don't stash or purposely leave a few important things in your car, at your desk, over his house or in your locker. If you NORMALLY carry those items in your purse...BE HONEST and leave them there! Make the hard decisions to do without for the next couple days. This should be reeeeeally fun! Enjoy!

Task 12 = +2 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

Reverse Your Routines WEEK 3: Task 11

REVERSE YOUR ROUTINES

Task 11 = +2 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

1. How did you feel after trying do reverse a routine for the first time?
2. Which routine challenged you the most?
3. How much thought did you put into completing some of your reversed routines and explain why?

"Keep the faith, keep making it happen and remember to always stay out of your own way!"

Jack A. Daniels is a best-selling author, speaker, syndicated columnist and counselor. Jack can be contacted for interviews, speaking engagements, questions or comments concerning this blog and/or project @ http://www.presspause.org/

For today's task, throughout the day, your job is to do as many personal routine tasks as you can in reverse. If you put your pants on by placing your left leg in first; today begin by putting in your right first. If you start combing the left side of your hair first; today, reverse the order. Brushing your teeth, how you hold your coffee, which hand you use to eat or wear your watch. How you park your car, take the stairs vs. elevator, which hand you use to navigate your mouse and so on! Be conscious and aware of the routines you've become accustomed to performing. Make the decision to NOT repeat those routines no matter how weird it may feel.

This is a fun activity to perform because many of us have our lives on auto-pilot and don't realize the ritualistic routines we perform daily. Some things are going to feel very awkward, but do your best to reverse as many of your routines as possible.

If You Were Being Honest WEEK 2: Task 10

Do you know where you are?"  Watch video
IF YOU WERE BEING HONEST

For today's task, take a sheet of paper, write out and finish the following statements. Don't rush and don't filter anything. Write a total of 5 rationalizations of how you truly feel for each statement. If one of the statements doesn't apply to you, skip it and focus on the ones that do.

1. I feel guilty because __________.
2. I feel sad because ____________.
3. I am angry because ___________.
4. I am sorry because ___________.
5. I am scared because __________.
6. I want to _____________.

Now take the total list of all the statements you've written and highlight the ones that stir up the most emotional memory(s) for you. Keep this list somewhere close because we're going to reference what you've highlighted as your starting point. This is "Where You Are." Now it's time to begin working on getting you to where you want to be.

Great job this week and keep up the good work!

Rip Him a New One! WEEK 2: Task 9

Do you know where you are?"  Watch video

RIP HIM A NEW ONE

Imagine your ex, your boss, abuser or whichever person caused you the most pain in your life is right in front of you. Tell them ALL of your feelings as if they can hear and respond to you. Be realistic. Embrace the true emotions and sentiments you feel. Cuss them out, scream, argue, console, point your finger, cry, whine, pace or whatever you normally do when you express your feelings. Just be authentic and don't hold anything back! You don't have to act this out alone. You can role play with your girlfriend or sister. The person helping you doesn't need to do anything but hold your hand and listen.

Before you do this task, make sure you're in an environment where you feel comfortable. This task may be difficult to perform because it requires you going to a place in your mind you may have closed in order to protect yourself. Role-playing a scene may be somewhat painful, hurtful, shameful or embarrassing to remember. The idea is to get in touch with some of the feelings you've been holding on to. However, if this exercise is too hard for you do right now, its ok, skip it and come back to it another day.

Task 9 = +3 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

What's Holding You Hostage? WEEK 2: Task 8

Do you know where you are?"  Watch video

WHAT'S HOLDING YOU HOSTAGE?
We are special. Our hands and feet provide us with the tools we need to accomplish many tasks. If we were entangled in thread, yarn, or fishing line, we would more than likely be able to free ourselves. How would the birds, turtles, and other animals free themselves? Try this exercise.

Procedure: Your hand is going to represent an animal of your choice. First, take a rubber band and put it around the back of your hand, looping the pinky and the thumb. (see picture) Without using your teeth OR your other hand OR arm, try to remove the rubber band from your hand. You have 30 seconds.

Were you able to find a creative way to free yourself?  Unfortunately, many animals are not able to free themselves. This can cause starvation, strangulation or suffocation.

This task is a simple reminder of how much control you have in the success of healing and moving on. Fortunately, you have or have access to several tools you need to free yourself from whatever bondage is holding you hostage. You just have to be courageous and creative enough to utilize them!

Task 8 = +1 point for completing

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

1. Write about 3 things you feel are possible keeping you from moving on?
2. What have you creatively done to help you get over what you've listed?
3. What could you do that you haven't tried yet?

Show Some She-motions WEEK 2: Task 7

"Do you know where you are?"  Watch video

SHOW SOME SHE-MOTIONS

There are over 6000 words for emotions in the English language. Today, get a piece of paper and write down every emotion you've felt in the past 3 days. Don't try to rationalize; just write. Were you angry, sad, happy, hurt, disappointed, excited, feeling lost and so on. After you've written every emotion that comes to mind, flip the paper over and draw a line down the middle. Label 1 column "Good" and the other column "Bad." Place your list of emotions in their appropriate columns and then rank them by importance.

Emotions are confusing. There are days when we feel wonderful and days when we question if we even know the raving lunatic who looks and sounds like us, but acts like the people we talk about on television! We're human and the range of emotions we experience daily varies. The emotions we experience while going through a healing process will often slip through the radar because our focus tends to be elsewhere. That's why it's important to check in every now and then.

Task 7 = +2 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

1. How did you feel when you looked at your entire list?
2. Which emotion(s) surprised you the most on your list?
3. Is there any emotion(s) present more than others? Describe what you're doing when that emotion is present.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall WEEK 2: Task 6

WEEK 2: Task 6

Welcome back!

"Do you know where you are?"  Watch video

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

Pause for 5 minutes. Focus on your breathing. Close your eyes and take long deep breaths in and out. Imagine each breath takes you deeper inside your mind. Picture a beautiful place. Somewhere you've been before, want to go or a place you've imagined. This place is safe and free for you to be authentic. Imagine standing in front of a mirror looking at a reflection of you. Look into the mirror and ask the person staring back at you, "How are you doing?" Don't just ask to be asking. Really search their eyes for the truth. Notice their posture, their clothing, facial expressions, eye contact and so forth.

It's very easy to develop a pattern of lying to ourselves when we're going through something in our lives. The key to success is pausing long enough to be honest about where we truly stand. Not the public perception we're portraying to everyone else, but the person we truly are deep down and don't want the world to see.

2. How did you feel when you asked your reflection the question?

3. Did you recognize yourself? What's different about you?

I'm SO Excited! WEEK 1:Task 5

"Can You Spare Some Change?"  Watch video

WEEK 1: Task 5
I'M SO EXCITED!
They say, "The older we get, the more stuck in our ways we become." I personally believe age is just another number somebody invented to keep score, but what do I know? I got some exciting news the other day, but my reaction didn't even come close to matching the reward. After receiving the news, I just paused, smiled a little bit, nodded my head and quietly said, "yeah" to myself. This wasn't a person who was excited, this was a person who'd become accustomed to playing it cool. Whick leads me to today's challenge.

Today, take 30 seconds to act out being really EXCITED! Don't act it out like the sophisticated, poised, always in control, grown up, adult you are; rather act excited in a child-like manner. Think of how a baby responds when they're tickled OR how a 5 year old kid acts after you've just rewarded them with a surprise trip to an amusement park. Use EVERY part of your body to show your excitement. Really get into the act and go ALL out! You don't have to act this out in front of people, but there are extra credit points available if you do!

task 5 = +1 points for completing (+2 for acting out in front of other people)

BIG Hugs for Everyone WEEK 1: Task 4

Welcome back!

"Can You Spare Some Change?"  Watch video

WEEK 1: Task 4

BIG HUGS for EVERYONE

There's something about a hug and the way it makes you feel. When done in the right context, a hug can make everything that's gone bad, haywire or really wrong seem so much better. It's the quiet, nonverbal gesture that brings joy to everyone who participates. On the other hand, hugs can be an invasion of your personal space when unwarranted. When you are unfamiliar, upset or uncomfortable with a person, a hug can be one of the most unwelcomed acts imagined! Which brings us to today’s task.

This task may be hard for some of you, but trust me it's going to be EXTREMELY rewarding! Today, you need to give a minimum of 5 hugs to 5 different people you NORMALLY don't hug. Pick a co-worker, stranger, friend or whoever you choose. If you get on a roll and give more than 5, that's ok, but 5 is your absolute minimum. I know this may be difficult, but swallow your pride and drink a cup of courage to help you step outside of your comfort zone. You can do it!

task 4 = +1 points for completing

Journal Questions:

After you complete this task - Go to the quiet space you've created for your self, take 3 deep breaths, read the below questions and journal about everything that comes to mind. Don't think too hard...just write as if you were talking on the phone to a friend.

2. How did you feel before and after your first hug? How about the final hug?

3. How did other people's reaction to your hug make you feel?

Making it Without Make-up WEEK 1:Task 3

Welcome back!

"Can You Spare Some Change?"  Watch video

WEEK 1: Task 3

MAKING IT WITHOUT MAKE-UP

Ooook...so this one may be pretty rough (no pun intended) for some of you. Designate a day to officially be NO MAKE-UP day! I see you with your lips curled up, shaking your head, mouth wide open, mumbling under your breath, "He MUST be crazy." The answer would be, "YES, I am!" Trust me, I know and understand how important this is to some of you so THIS time, I'm going to allow you to at least wear some lip gloss; but NO MAKE-UP!

I know some of you think you can sneak your way out of and around this task, but let me clarify a couple other points.
  • Wearing no make-up on a day when you DON'T need to go anywhere doesn't count!
  • You MUST journey without make-up in public!
  • IF you normally don't wear any make-up...you have to go without something you DO wear daily (lip gloss, chapstick, deodorant, nail polish, your purse, pick something!
Have fun!

Stop Driving Blindfolded WEEK 1: Task 2

Welcome back!

"Can You Spare Some Change?"  Watch video

WEEK 1: Task 2
STOP DRIVING BLINDFOLDED

Routines sometimes do us a disservice. Many of us wake up, brush our teeth and drive blindfolded to jobs we hate and talk to people we don't like everyday. We've become accustomed to and robotically conditioned ourselves to doing the same things the same way over and over.

For task #2, you need to pick a day to take a different route to and from work. DO NOT take the same route coming OR going. That means you'll probably have to leave a little earlier because you'll be taking the long way around. Don't lie to yourself and say, "I don't know any other way to get there." Map it out before you go, but whatever you do, DO NOT take your regular route!

Note: If you don't drive to work OR you aren't working right now, wherever you go this week that is routine...take a different route. (Church, school, grocery store, daycare, etc.)

Change is the conduit that catapults us into our true character and purpose. It's equivalent to growth and growth is the natural order of life. If something isn't growing, it's either artificially made OR it's dead! So my question to you is, "Are you growing?" Are you willing to take the necessary steps to abandon the spaces, places, people or situations you've become so familiar and comfortable with in order to grow and get unstuck? This week's challenges will focus on "Getting you Comfortable with the "Idea of Change."

DON'T FORGET to Comment, Share & Discuss with everyone!

WEEK 1: Task 1
Pose for the Camera Now...Flick, Flick, Flick!

Take as many pictures of yourself as you can. All pictures have to be of you acting "OUT of YOUR character!" Be silly, mean, abstract, nice, naughty or WHATEVER everyone else KNOWS isn't like you! You then have to SHARE a few of the pictures taken with at least 5 people. Post them to facebook, twitter, email them to your parents, kids or you can even show them to the funny looking cashier at Walgreens!

You don't have to do this activity alone. Contract your kids, friends, family or significant other. No glamour shots or fake smiles for the camera; we ALL know you're a diva. But we don't want the diva today. Let out the kid in you! Remember to act OUTSIDE of your character. Have fun! I'll be sure to check facebook to see who took some good pics!

Healing 100 Hearts Challenge NEXT Steps - Day 1

CONGRATULATIONS for taking 1 step closer to becoming a BETTER YOU! Welcome to the Healing 100 Hearts in 100 Days Challenge! Now it's time to make sure you have all the information you need to get READY to COMMIT to you!

Watch video:

How does the Challenge work?
  • Every Sunday, there will be a video message from me with an underlining theme for the week.
  • Throughout the week, you’ll receive tasks associated with the week’s theme via (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, www.100hearts.net ) OR the BEST way to receive and check the tasks is to SUBSCRIBE to www.jackadaniels.blogspot.com  This Blog will be your BEST Challenge reference point for now.
  • In addition, you should also sign up for the newsletter to receive DIRECT messages/tasks to your email address. (GOTO my personal page or 100 Hearts page on Facebook and click on the “Join My List” tab)  If you’re NOT a Facebook member, you can send an email to 100hearts@presspause.org and we’ll easily get you signed up.
  • You’ll receive points for every task you successfully complete. These point are simply a measure of your progress in the process. (No one is grading you but you…Be HONEST with yourself)
  • Some of the tasks will be easy…some will be hard, depending on where you are in your process of growth.
I’m encouraging you all to DISCUSS the tasks, your thoughts, successes and failures with one another so we can ALL LEARN and GROW from each other’s experiences.

Pretty simple so far…Right?

What do I do now?
Over the course of this week you need to do some prep work for Sunday’s start date.
  1. Buy a journal with lots of pages. (an old school spiral notebook will work also if you don’t want to get too fancy)
  2. Purchase a few candles. The number of candles is up to you. If you already have a few around the house…which since you’re all women you probably do…USE THOSE!
  3. Go to Home Depot and purchase a packet of Viola (#8339) or Pansy (#8388) flower seeds. (Packet only cost $1.00)
  4. Go to Home Depot and also purchase Jiffy Windowsill Greenhouse plant carton. (it looks like an empty egg carton) It’s used to grow plants.
  5. Locate a “working” camera. If you don’t have one or your phone doesn’t take pics…borrow one from a friend!
  6. Last, and MOST importantly, FIND or CREATE a space in your house that’s comfortable, quiet, free of clutter AND distractions. This can be your favorite chair, prayer closet, patio, basement, bathtub…WHEREVER! Just make sure it’s consistent and convenient.
Note: if you don’t have a Home Depot close to you, visit your local flower shop.

Overall, I’m excited you’re accepting the challenge. If no one has told you before, I will, "I'm PROUD of you!" The journey we’re about to take together is going to be awesome! I can’t wait for you to become the BETTER you. Don’t start off on the WRONG foot this weekend. Do the WORK and be READY to WORK on Sunday! I'm counting on you to help me help everyone else accepting this challenge with you! Congratulations again!
